Zindzi Zwietering (1992, Amsterdam) is an artist working mainly with photography. She is interested in the physical experience of cities. During her photography studies at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands, she developed a fascination for the influence of (urban) space towards people. During her studies she interned with the Los Angeles based artist Sharon Lockhart. Over the course of two years she assisted on Lockhart’s film ‘Rudzienko’, produced in Poland.
For her graduation project ‘160.000m2’, Zwietering researched ‘De Rotterdam’ - a building by Rem Koolhaas - and the futuristic theories it beholds. The book of this project was taken into the collection of the O.M.A. library. Her most recent work ‘Bron’ was solo-exhibited twice (gallery WG Kunst, and Pakhuis de Zwijger), and was part of Fotofestival Schiedam (Netherlands). The project was featured by Paper-journal magazine, Kiekie Tabloid, Broad magazine and het Parool. Next to personal work, Zwietering teaches photography and has worked on various assignments and collaborations, featured by i.a. Kaltblut magazine and The Independent daily.

Artist Statement

Zindzi Zwietering is interested in the physical experience of cities. How do the sensorial experiences of smell, touch, feel and view influence our experiences of (city) space? She tends to look for the generic, within metropols. Her photographic interest lies with urban architecture and construction. Zwietering interested in the conflict between the ‘made concept of architecture’ on the one hand, and the individual and intuitive use of space on the other hand. Big themes like climate change and dystopia often occur within her research. Zindzi aims to make these big, hard to grasp, topics that are extremely hard to grasp, tangible.

Through photography she tries to get grip. Her working process is a constant balance between intuition and ratio. Often the base of Zindzi’s work is a political event, or an already existing theory. She tends to research her subjects thoroughly. Yet, when she is photographing, she works intuitively. Zwietering is interested in juxtapositioning and materializing her work.
